Straight out of the biggest small town in England (as they describe it), Big Joan came together in Southampton, during the summer of 1998, relocating to Bristol in 1999. Taking their name from a Captain Beefheart song and fronted by Berlin born Annette Becker, a confrontational vocalist with a distinctive and powerful voice, the band have quickly earned a reputation for fiery live performances and hook-filled but uncompromising songs.

Originally drummer-less, DJ Lazy B provided beats and keyboards. Replaced by Keith Hall on drums, formerly of industrial shock merchants Hookers for Jesus, the band developed quickly; honing a sparse, emotional, bass-heavy sound, somewhere between post punk and the frontiers of drum ‘n’ bass. The Big Joan line-up is completed by Adam Burrows (guitar), Simon Jarvis (bass). ‘Other People’s Fight’s’ their debut EP came out on Sink and Stove in 2001.

Big Joan have now released their debut album ''Insects and Engines' in 2004 on their own label Blood Red Sounds. Visit www.bloodredsounds.co.uk for more information.
