Gravenhurst is the work of singer and guitarist Nick Talbot, with contributions from other musicians, including drummer David Collingwood and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Paul Nash. Nick started fingerpicking the guitar when he was twelve, influenced equally by Simon and Garfunkel and the Smiths. Gravenhurst started out as a quiet solo project alongside Nick's main band, Assembly Communications. Shortly after their first NME review in October 1999, their bass player Luke Gale was killed in a road accident, and Assembly Communications split. Nick continued making music, taking the name 'Gravenhurst' from an instrumental guitar piece by David Pajo. For the record, 'graven' is archaic English for 'written', and a 'hurst' is a small cluster of trees on a hillside. Make of that what you will.
With influences ranging from Nick Drake and Simon and Garfunkel to Red House Painters and Low, Gravenhurst's dark reverie of shimmering guitars and haunting vocals quickly built a very loyal following. Fusing classic songwriting with the pastoral-ambient tradition of Bristol bands such as Movietone and Flying Saucer Attack, the acclaimed debut album Internal Travels was a split release between Silent Age Records (UK) and Red Square (US). The expansive second album, 'Flashlight Seasons' a brilliant fusion of folk-ruralist stylings and pure, daydream-pop was released in spring 2003 alongside a US tour. The album was a split release between Silent Age Records and Sink & Stove in the UK, and Red Square in the US and Europe. Early March 2003 also saw a limited edition 7" single from Gravenhurst on the Rough Trade Shops label For Us.
Gravenhurst has since signed to Warp Records and 'Flashlight Seasons' has been re-released as a Warp release. Sink and Stove have very limited copies of the first pressing left, so hurry!
